Those who knows a thing or two about genetics, must have heard of this guy called Gregor Mendel, who is considered to be the father of modern science of genetics, imagine yourself to be an Austrian monk in the 1800s, its a cold friday night and you don’t have internet, everything in your garden wilted and you got a lot of pea plants,your work will most certainly consist of cross pollinating a bajillion kinds of peas.

That was when he discoverd the famous mendelian inheritance. He noticed something which he called “factors”, were present inside each kind of peas and they were inherited following a certain set of laws, and with these laws, he was able to create the biggest/desired peas, smallest/undesired peas, the factors are today called genes.
So was Mendel’s nerd rage by breeding bigger or smaller peas“natural”? or was he simply making a process that would normally take generations to come into fruiation, and squeeze them into a much shorter and observable time frame. “Unnatural” Because it was faster? But wait, now adays in a lab somewhere in Canada or US, scientists are inserting desirable DNAs from other spieces at the blink of an eye, we now have the technology and computing power to sequence the human genome in 26 hours, and it will only get faster and faster according to Moore’s laws, interestingly, these genes are some of the most extensively tested due to its proximity to a bunch of scientists and a super computer, and had proven to show no undesired effects in the last two decades.

on an anti GMO ad without bothering much with the science
While most of us were still in our sleep 6am in the morning, Ricke Kress, president of Southern gardens citrus was waken up by an unsettling call from his co-worker: “…..Its here.” said the dreaded voice.
Sounds like a intro of a horror-scifi movie, but it turns out that in the real world, the actual industry of citrus harvesting is under attack from diseases constantly.
In the real world, problems don’t go away with wishful thinkings, and decisions had to be made. Mr Ricke Kress did actually receive a call from his grove manager and he was notified of the disease that will potentially destory the $9 billion citrus industry and 76,000 jobs. Ricke had to find a tree that is resistant to the disease which doesn’t exist, or use a gene out of 30,000 genes from a pig, which is a really tiny bit of pig that is harmless. He used that really small bit of pig.
He saved his company and the industry, everyone hailed him a hero,and he get blasted by anti-GMO parties for doing his job for all eternity . Let it go Ricke you old fool, greedy corporatist!
Just one example how science of genetics saves the world, and goes unappreciated.
